Eugene Noah Jordan, Sr., 94, of 402 Sign Pine Road, Tyner, NC, died Tuesday, March 5, 2024, in ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Jordan was born in Chowan County on September 5, 1929, and was the last surviving of eight children born to the late Noah Edward and Mattie Ethel Ward Jordan. His sisters were Mildred Knott and Nina Byrum, and his brothers were McIhrie, Forrest, L.B., Rudolph, and Graydon Jordan. In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death in 2021 by his wife of 68 years, Vivian Wiggins Jordan.
A 1952 graduate of North Carolina State University, in his earlier years he worked for the US Forest Service. Later while tending the family farming operation and working as a Registered Land Surveyor, he continued in forestry, cruising timber and working as a steward of the woodlands.
A faithful member of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church, he had served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, was an honorary lifetime deacon, had been both a teacher and Superintendent of Sunday School, an RA Leader, the church treasurer, and at the time of his death was serving as Trustee.
A founding member of the Ryland Ruritan Club, other community involvement included his serving on the Edenton-Chowan Board of Education for 27 years, including several terms as its chairman.
Surviving are his children, Susan Small (husband, John) of Greensboro, Joan Vaccaro (husband, Rodney) of Agoura Hills, CA, and Gene Jordan (wife, Patricia), Bill Jordan (wife, Melanie), and Bob Jordan (wife, Jill), all of Tyner; 13 grandchildren, John Small, Jr. (wife, Dusti) of Okeechobee, FL, Mary Small (husband, Brandon Wu) of Bethesda, MD, Margaret Hinnant (husband, Scott) of Kenly, Ruth Borgmann (husband, Matt) of Greensboro, Olivia Vaccaro of Philadelphia, PA, Isabella Vaccaro of Portland, OR, Caroline Jordan (husband, Ed Conrad) of Albuquerque, NM, Grace Jordan of Salt Lake City, UT, Noah Jordan of Raleigh, Katherine Collins (husband, Tyler) of Pembroke, Heath Jordan (wife, Elizabeth) of Hobbsville, Landon Jordan (wife, Jenna) of Kernersville, and Meredith Meekins (husband, Hunter) of Manteo; 18 great-grandchildren, Jack, Everett, Vivian, and Violet Small, Amaya and Talia Wu, Henry, Bailey, and Kelsey Hinnant, Heidi and Vivienne Collins, Clara Gray Jordan, Silas, Charlie, and Ridge Jordan, and Parrish, Amelia, and Riggs Meekins.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the social hall immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 3025 Virginia Road, or to the Ryland Ruritan Club, in care of Steve Knight, 455-B Wingfield Road, both in Tyner, NC 27980.
