Ervin Eugene Mansfield, Sr., 83, of 226 Great Hope Church Road, Hertford, NC, passed away peacefully Monday, April 29, 2024 in his home where he was being cared for by family.
Mr. Mansfield was born in Perquimans County on August 14, 1940 and was the son of the late Samuel Jesse and Helen Byrum Mansfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jesse Ray Mansfield and Frank Mansfield (wife, Phyllis, deceased).
A retired teacher, he spent 32 years teaching Social Studies and Psychology in the Chowan and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County school systems. During his career, 28 years were spent at Northeastern High School where he had served eight years as the Chairman of the Social Studies Department and 15 years as both the Instructor of the Hunter Safety Team and Coach of the Shooting Team. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities together with his brothers, son, grandsons, granddaughter, and friends. An accomplished taxidermist, he had served a number of years with the NC Taxidermist Association as a board member, Vice-President and President, was a three-term Competition Chairman of the National Taxidermists Association, and had served 10 years on the Advisory Board for the Taxidermist Mini Course at Piedmont Community College. He was a charter member of Bear Swamp Hunt Club where he had served for over 40 years both as a board member and as Secretary until 2012.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 13 years, Diane Chappell Mansfield; two children, Shawn M. Biggs (husband, Brian) and Ervin E. “Buddy” Mansfield, Jr. (wife, DeAnna); four step-children, Corey Pierce, Stacey Pierce, Kevin Pierce (wife, Kristin), and Jolie Raper; seven grandchildren, Brennan, Carson, Avery, and Samuel Biggs, and Justin (wife, Hope), Jordan, and Madison Mansfield, five step-grandchildren, C.J. (wife, Carolyn), Dylan, and Gracie Pierce, Kelsey Carter (husband, Taylor), and Barry Ward; three great-grandchildren, Aurora Rohde, Silas and Grayson Pierce; a sister-in-law, Judy Mansfield; a brother-in-law, Elton Chappell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. Cedarwood Cemetery, and will be conducted by The Rev. Darryl Stallings. Friends may join the family Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence.
