Emmett Elliott Winborne, Sr.

   Emmett Elliott Winborne, Sr., 65, of 3343 Rocky Hock Road, Edenton, NC, died Wednesday, February 19, 2020, in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.

   Mr. Winborne was born in Chowan County on June 29, 1954, and was the son of the late William Hutchins “Hutch” Winborne and Hurley Bunch Winborne. Retired after 34 years of farming, he also had been a poultry grower for Perdue for over 25 years.

   Emmett loved Chowan County and its people. Community involvement included his 30 years of service with the Center Hill-Crossroads Volunteer Fire Dept., membership in the Chowan Ruritans, and serving two terms on the Chowan County Board of Commissioners. Farm tours for school children, Democratic politics, fire department fellowship, and talking to his friends at the store, were all a part of his life and his way giving to others. He was raised in the fellowship of Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Winborne.

   Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Taylor Winborne; two daughters, Stacey Winborne Layden of Edenton and Sarah Winborne Grandy and husband, Josh, of Elizabeth City; a son, E. Elliott Winborne, Jr. of Edenton; a brother, Bobby Winborne of Edenton; and seven grandchildren, Andrew and Carley Layden, Morgan Winborne, Johnny, Payden, and Shelby Grandy, and Joshua Grandy, Jr. (due to be born in March).

   A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by Pastor Junior White. A private burial will be at a later time in the family cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, or all other times at Stacey’s home, 3505 Rocky Hock Road, Edenton.
