Ella Mohorn Hassell

 Ella Mohorn Hassell, 95, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC, and more recently of Chesapeake, VA, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2024 in her home where she was being cared for by family.

 Mrs. Hassell was born in Halifax County, NC on April 7, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Roy Gray Mohorn and Mary Lucille Burnett Mohorn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loma Harrison Hassell, brothers, George and Charles Mohorn, and by a step grandson, Joshua Lueptow.

 A homemaker, for many years she had lived in Elizabeth City where she enjoyed membership in South Mills Church of Christ and later with Journey Christian Church. Most recently she had been a member of Great Bridge Church of Christ. As part of her ministry to others, she was instrumental in facilitating groups in each of the three churches she had been active in known respectively as A Day Apart, The Gathering Place, and Potter’s Hands, a ministry that centered on senior citizens which was held a day each month and she had overseen for 31 years.

 Surviving is her daughter, Susan Hassell Lueptow (Ronald) of Virginia Beach, VA; a son, Loma Harrison Hassell, II (Denise) of Kihei, HI; a brother, Joseph Mohorn of Springdale, AR; four grandchildren, Jonathan Hassell (Laura), Marie Doctorchik (Steve), Cameron Watford (Elizabeth), and Colemon Watford (Lacey); a step grandson, Michael Lueptow (Lauren); 10 great-grandchildren, Corrine, Daniel, and Rachel Hassell, Gunnar, Gage, and Geronimo Doctorchik, and Abigail, Kenan, Jaydon, and Tyson Watford; and two step great-grandchildren, Darcy and Teddy Lueptow.

 A service in celebration of her life will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the Mid-Atlantic Christian University Chapel in the Albert Blanton III Center, 715 N. Poindexter St., Elizabeth City. A private burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the cafeteria of the university immediately following service on Sunday.

 Memorial contributions may be made to Great Bridge Church of Christ, 101 Hurdle Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23322, and designated for use in the Ella Hassell Memorial Fund.
