Elizabeth Carter "Betsy" Lawrence

Gone to be with Jesus is Elizabeth Carter “Betsy” Lawrence, formerly of Edenton, NC, and more recently of Savannah, Georgia.

Born in Elizabeth City, NC on May 17, 1943, she was the daughter of the late John Southall Lawrence, Jr. and Elizabeth Grant Lawrence. She, with her parents and brother John, lived in the following NC counties: Hertford, Pasquotank, Currituck, Dare, Tyrrell, and she in Chowan. She attended both the Elizabeth City and Columbia, NC high schools, graduating from Columbia in 1961. After graduation, she attended East Carolina Teacher’s College, now known as East Carolina University in Greenville, and The College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City.

Active in her faith, she had enjoyed membership in the Assembly of Praise in Columbia, Albemarle Baptist in Edenton, and was a current member of Edenton First Assembly. Community involvement included her establishing the Meals on Wheels Program in Columbia, the Tyrrell Literacy Council, and working through the Vista Program with seniors.

Surviving are daughter, Georgia Walters and husband John Toner of Savannah, GA; her son, Grant Alexander Davenport of West Union, SC; grandchildren; Courtland and Shadow of Georgia, Hunter of Ohio, and Alex, and wife Heather, and Megan of SC, and Carlee Joe of Maryland; great-grandson, Conley of SC, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and great-grandson Jonah Davenport.

A memorial service is being planned for when conditions are safer, and those arrangements, when finalized, will be announced by the family.

Betsy was an avid lover of the ocean, and all creatures within it, so the family asks that in lieu of flowers or balloons (which are deadly to sea life), contributions in her memory may be made to the Caretta Research Project (protecting Georgia’s Sea Turtles), at the Savannah Science Museum, Inc., P.O. Box 9841, Savannah, GA 31412, or online at www.carettaresearchproject.org.
