Eleanor White Evans Byrum, 95, of 241 Yellow Hammer Road, Tyner, NC, died Friday, November 6, 2020 in her home where she was cared for by her family.
Mrs. Byrum was born in Chowan County on December 23, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Zacharia Trotman and Effie Louise White Evans. As a child she attended Gum Pond Elementary School, later Chowan High School, and graduated from Coastal Business College in Norfolk, VA with a Diploma in Special Secretarial Course. Employed with the Chowan County Department of Public Welfare in the 40’s, Campen’s Jewelers, Waff Brothers, Inc., and the NC Employment Security Commission, she lastly worked with and retired from the Chowan County Department of Social Services.
A faithful member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, she joined and was baptized when she was 13 years old. She taught Sunday School for 20 years, was a member of the Adult Bible Study Group, and the Bertha Dale Sunday School Class. Outside of her church activities, she enjoyed her membership in the Center Hill-Crossroads Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the NC Social Services Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Leon Wilbur Byrum; a son, Timothy Byrum; sisters, Lillie Mae Saunders, Lonie Harrell, Pearl Harrell, and Beulah Williams; and brothers, Carey, Edward, Milton, Marvin, Roland, and Alvin Evans.
Surviving are two sons, Nelson Byrum and wife, Rhonda, of Tyner, and Wilbur Byrum and wife, Lois, of Edenton; her sister, Helen Lowe of Franklin, VA; five grandchildren, Crystal Copeland (Walter), Jaime Cain (Dan), Catherine Caraway (Tre`), Rebecca Whitson (Mike Wooten), and Hannah Forehand (Justyn); 11 great-grandchildren, Megan Boyd (Zack), Will Copeland (Sarah Swain), Cullen, Liam, and Gavin Caraway, Eleanora Wooten, Theo Forehand, Hanna Cain (Chandler Clardy), and Daniel, Maddox, and Walker Cain; and a great-great-grandson, Hunter Copeland.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastors Rusty Womack and Junior White. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the grave immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
