Elaine Meher Mathews, 79, of Hertford, NC, passed away peacefully Monday, March 7, 2022, in her home following a valiant battle with a long illness. She was surrounded by her children and her husband.
Born in Fulton County, NY, on September 26, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Delbert Meher and Arlene Hayes Dutcher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Babe, and Gary Meher, all of Upstate, NY; and by a grandson, Tyler Herba of Hertford.
Elaine attended and enjoyed fellowship with Chapel on the Sound and shared the joy of her faith through serving her Lord and others. When faced with recent health challenges, she often said how grateful she was for the live services she could watch on her tablet. Elaine had a servant's heart and lived by 1 Peter 4:10: " Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in it's various forms."
Other enjoyments included her love of playing cards and eating Mexican food. Although, she did not hesitate to tell you how she felt about fried chicken. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, she loved spending time in the kitchen baking with her grand-kids.
Surviving is her husband, Daniel L. Mathews, of the home; three children, Dan Herba, Shelly Waggoner (husband, Jack), and Jimmy Herba, all of Hertford; three siblings, Pete Meher, Marlene Flynn and Cheryl Wolfe, all of Upstate, NY; seven grandchildren, Jes Kariuki, John Carey, Steven Herba, Matt Herba, Courtney Herba Asbury, Jimmy Herba, and Brantley Herba; four great-grandchildren, Liam Herba, Paxton Asbury, Milah Asbury, and Samahdi Kariuki; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Chapel on the Sound, 112 Leisure Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by Pastor Kevin Bettinger. Friends may join the family for a luncheon in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service on Saturday.
