Edna King Smith

Edna Ailene King Smith, 88, of Davenports Lane, Edenton, NC, died Wednesday, December 23, 2020, in Vidant Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born in Chowan County on April 10, 1932, and was the only child of the late Charles Edward King and Margaret Chappell King Ward. Born with the proverbial “green thumb”, she spent her working life in horticulture. Opening London Bridge Nursery in Virginia Beach, she managed it for many years, using her talents in both the nursery and the florist departments. As long as health permitted, she was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin Larry Smith.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan S. Hines and husband, John, of Suffolk, VA; her son, Larry Clay Smith of Elizabeth City; five grandchildren, John Hines (Megan), Ryan Hines (Jamie), Brandon Hines, Damon Smith, and Alena Sanderlin (Jarrod); and eight great-grandchildren, Hudson, Nora, John Marsden, Lyla, Mila, Jake, Wyatt, and Deacon.

The family is planning a memorial service for a later time when it is safer for family and friends to come together to celebrate her life. Those arrangements will be updated on this obituary page when they are complete.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, in care of Lisa Chappell, 292 Snug Harbor Road, Hertford, NC 27944.

Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting the family with arrangements and online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
