Earl Clarence Bassett, III

Mr. Earl Clarence Bassett, III, 86, of Edenton, NC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his family.

A native of Mobile, AL, Earl was the husband of 64 years to Rebecca Brigman “Becky” Bassett and the son of Earl Clarence Bassett, Jr. and June Penny Bassett, both deceased. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his son, John Edward “Jeb” Bassett; and sister, June “Tootsie” Stryzinski.

Earl graduated from Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He then joined the U.S. Army, where he served in Munich, Germany. After serving in the military, Earl transitioned to Healthcare Administration where he worked into his 70’s. He worked for various healthcare organizations, Vidant Chowan Hospital as the first Executive Director of Foundation; Physician Recruitment; and was an integral part in the development of the Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center (RCCHC). Earl was very active in the Methodist Church and other civic organizations, where he served as President of the Kiwanis Club. He loved gardening and was active in the Master Gardening Program. Earl especially loved spending time with his family at the beach.

Survivors include his wife, Becky; son, Earl C. “Tad” Bassett, IV and wife, Martha; daughter, Cathy Bassett Smith; daughter-in-law, Lynn Bassett; grandchildren, Charles H. “C.H.” Williams, III and wife, Kara, Jonathan C. Bassett and wife, Ashley, and Julianna L. Bassett; four great grandchildren; sister, Penny Bassett Smith; and his beloved rescued dog, Lilli.

A memorial service celebrating Earl’s life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in Edenton United Methodist Church with Rev. Elizabeth Polk officiating. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
