Donald Clayton Madry, Sr.

   Donald Clayton “Don” Madry, Sr., 89, of 3350 Rocky Hock Road, Edenton, NC, died Monday, January 1, 2024 in his home where he was surrounded by his family.

   Mr. Madry was born in Halifax County on November 30, 1934, and was the son of the late Clyde Hassell Madry, Sr. and Mary Morgan Walker Madry. The family included his three brothers, Billy, Clyde, Jr., and Eddie.

   Retired from United Piece & Dye Works in Edenton, Mr. Madry had worked in the textile industry for over 40 years. He attended Christ Sanctified Holy Church and in earlier years had been active at Rocky Hock Baptist Church where he coached RA Baseball. Music was an important part of his life and many will remember him playing with the “Country Jam” band at David’s Red Barn. Community involvement included his work with Unit 3 (Rocky Hock) of the Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad and his past membership in the Rocky Hock Ruritan Club.

   Surviving is his wife of 32 years, Nancy Chappell Madry; his children, Morgan Monds of Gates, Donald C. “Clay” Madry, Jr. of Chocowinity, Mel Madry (wife, Shirley) of Tyner, and Benjamin Madry and Nathan Madry, both of Edenton; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; extended members of both the Madry and Chappell families; and many friends.

   Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by Brother Bernard Collier. The burial will follow in the Chappell Family Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the residence.
