Charles Edwin Smith, 82, of 254 Fowler Fork Road, Hertford, NC, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, in his home.
Mr. Smith was born in Perquimans County on October 22, 1936, and was the son of the late Roy Winslow Smith and Irma Jane Morris Smith. A graduate of Perquimans County High School, he retired from Shop 52, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he had worked in Electronics, specifically with Signal Generators, and had taught classes in the shipyard’s Apprentice School. For many years he farmed, first working the family land with his father, and later, on his own after returning home days from working his job at the shipyard. A “thinker and tinkerer”, he studied and analyzed everything from toasters and other simple things, to the complex workings of helicopters, submarines, and ships. Community involvement included his attending Evangelical Methodist Church, being a former member of the Parkville Ruritan Club and the Winfall Volunteer Fire Department, and serving in the North Carolina National Guard.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Ann Stanton Smith; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Martinez and husband, Sergio, of Hertford, and Kathryn Renee` Smith and husband, John Thomas Stolarczyk, of Elizabeth City; his sister, Mary Ella Meads and husband, Leroy, of Hertford, his granddaughter, Jacqueline Witherell of Bradenton, FL; and his step-mother, Katherine Smith of Bowie, MD.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Sean Scribner and the Rev. Jason Schubert. A private burial will be in the Bagley Swamp Community Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, and all other times at the home.
