Carole Elizabeth Taylor Sawyer, 84, of 608 Chowan Trail, Edenton, NC, died Monday, September 2, 2024, in ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Mrs. Sawyer was born in Suffolk, VA, on June 8, 1940, and was the daughter of the late Elton D. and Sadie King Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Sawyer, Jr.; a sister, Susan Taylor; and by a brother, Buddy Taylor.
Retired from the Portsmouth City School System where she worked as an administrative secretary, she had also worked in the school system’s DAC Program. In earlier years, she served as a nurse in the United States Navy, and later after her honorable discharge continued nursing at Portsmouth General Hospital. She was raised in the faith of and continued her membership in Savage’s Methodist Church in Gates.
Surviving are her twin sons, Kenneth Sawyer (wife, Terry) of Portsmouth, VA and Keith Sawyer (wife, Annette) of Greenville, SC; a sister, Cindy Jefferson, and a brother, Ronald Taylor, both of Hobbsville; four grandchildren, Philip Michael Sawyer, Curtis Ray Sawyer, Meagan Elizabeth Sawyer Hendrix, and Kenneth Allen Sawyer, Jr. (fiancé, Emily); and one great-grandson, James Ray Hendrix.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and will be conducted by Pastor Jeff Walton. The burial will be private in Savage’s Church Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Savage’s Methodist Church (Perpetual Care Fund), in care of Audrey Jackson, 715 Drum Hill Road, Gates, NC 27937.
