Bobby Jones

   Harold Robert "Bobby" Jones, 86, of 670 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023 in his home where he was being cared for by family.

   Mr. Jones was born in Perquimans County on September 14, 1936, and was the son of the late Thomas Hoyle Jones and Sallie Mae Hobbs Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Leah Frances Cartwright Jones, a sister, Miriam Haskett, brothers, Billy and Fred Jones, and by a daughter-in-law, Linda Jones.

   Retired as the owner of the former Tuck's Restaurant in Elizabeth City which he had operated for 30 years, he was a lifetime member of New Hope United Methodist Church (now New Hope Church), and more recently was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. Other memberships enjoyed included being a lifetime member of Durants Neck Ruritan Club, the Perquimans Masonic Lodge #106, and was active with the Perquimans County Republican Party. An avid reader, he also loved to sing, and along with his wife Frances and family, had the opportunity to sing in numerous weddings and funerals through the years.

   Surviving is his wife of 16 years, Kathy Goodwin Jones; two daughters, Cheryl Sawyer of Hertford and Melody Leonard (husband, Jake) of Bunker Hill, WV; three sons, Mike Jones (wife, Angela) of Zambia, Africa, Bernie Jones (wife, JoAnne) of Hertford, and Brian Jones (wife, Michele) of Rock Hill, SC; and a sister, Ruth Mengel of Hertford. Also surviving is Kathy's daughter, Cindy Boyd (husband, Chris) of New Bern, and two sons, Kevin Jones (wife, Jessica) of Siberia, Russia and Brett Jones (wife, Tammy) of Elizabeth City. Together Bobby and Kathy shared 28 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

   Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in New Hope Church, 2098 New Hope Church Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by Pastors Carroll Bundy, Greg Brinson, and Jerry Young. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence.
