Betsy Shepard Hassell

   Elizabeth Coke Shepard “Betsy” Hassell, 94, of 149 Bowden Lane, Edenton, NC, died Sunday, November 5, 2023 in ECU Health Chowan Hospital.

   Mrs. Hassell was born in Chowan County on October 27, 1929 and was the daughter of the late William Blount Shepard, Sr. and Bessie Hoskins Shepard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Wiggins Hassell; by her brothers, William Blount Shepard, Jr. (wife, Jenny, deceased) and Thomas Hoskins Shepard (wife, Becky, deceased); and by her grandson, Tyler Bowe Harris, Jr.

   A homemaker and mother, she had worked on an interim and part-time basis at The Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library and also as a poll worker with the Chowan County Board of Elections. A lifelong and faithful member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she also enjoyed membership in The Colonial Dames of America.

   Surviving are her children, Marion Bowden Hassell Harris (husband, Tyler) of New Bern and William Edgar Hassell of Edenton; a grandson, James Shepard Harris (wife, Lauren) and their children, Austin and Ellie Grace, of Wilmington; and her nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

   Following a private burial in Beaver Hill Cemetery, a service of remembrance will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and will be conducted by The Rev. Dr. Robert Sawyer. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the Parish Hall immediately following the service, or other times at the residence.
