Bessie Lane Newby

   Bessie Lee Lane Newby, 78, of Sandy Ridge Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2018.

   Mrs. Newby was born in Chowan County on February 12, 1940, and was the daughter of the late Luther James and Leora Goodwin Lane. In earlier years she had worked at the Valhalla Truck Stop, later for 25 years at the Edenton Cotton Mill, and lastly in food service at the Dept. of Defense Testing Facility at Harvey Point. A faithful member of Center Hill Baptist Church, she had served as President of her Sunday School class, and as secretary of the W.M.U. Other areas of involvement included her volunteering with the Meals on Wheels Program.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Redmond Newby; an unnamed infant brother; infant brothers Marvin Earl and William Fentress; sisters, Beulah Turner, Thelma Koenig, and Julia Ashley; brothers, Melvin and Thurman Earl Lane; and by a granddaughter, Kristine Song.

   Surviving are two daughters, Leora Winslow and husband, Bernie, of Belvidere, and Tammy Hardison Song of Winterville; two brothers, Alton “Red” Lane of Edenton and James “Jimmy” Lane of Belvidere; three grandchildren, Victoria Winslow, Chon Song, and Hannah Song Kwiatek and husband, Ben; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Russell Blanchard. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at Leora and Bernie’s home, 858 Hickory Cross Road, Belvidere.
