Benjamin Forrest “Ben” Hanson, 82, of Hertford, NC, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2025, in his home.
Mr. Hanson was born in Fergus Falls, MN on September 24, 1942, and was the son of the late Clinton Forrest and Marjorie Florence Northrup Hanson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, April Hastings; sisters, Molly Tanner and Judy Hanson; a brother, Duane Hanson; and son-in-law, Richard Edward Ashley, Sr.
Retired as a Chief Petty Officer with the US Navy following 20 years of service, he was a lifetime member of the William Clarence Jackson Post 6060 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, a founding member of the Holiday Island Yacht Club, and was one of the last three surviving charter members of Chapel on the Sound.
Surviving is his wife of 20 years, Jo Ann Holdren Hanson; two daughters, May A. Campen (husband, Webb) of Edenton and Hollie S. Bear of Clever, Missouri; his son, Jason B. Hanson of Englewood, Colorado; a brother, Arlan Hanson of Fargo, North Dakota; seven grandchildren, Rick Ashley (wife, Shauni), Steve Ashley (wife, Kimberly), Brityn, Brooke, and Nile Bear, Michael Joyner (wife, Autumn), and Autumn Todd; nine great-grandchildren, Rick III, Wyatt, Sadie, Saylor, Dalton, Hayden, Eli, Farrah, and Athena; and a large extended family. Also surviving are Jo Ann’s two sons and their families, Troy Blevins (wife, Cheryl) and Jeff Wood (wife, Jodie).
A service celebrating his life with military honors will be held Saturday, February 8, at 2:00 p.m. in Chapel on the Sound and will be conducted by Pastor Chris Messer. Friends may visit with the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to Chapel on the Sound, 106 Soundview Road, Hertford, NC 27944, or to Tri-County Animal Shelter, 138 Icaria Road, Tyner, NC 27980.
