Barbara Jean Moore Watkins, 84, of 1924 Paradise Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 in her home.
Mrs. Watkins was born in the Farmville community of Pitt County on December 30, 1934, was the daughter of the late Joseph Hines Moore and Addie Dildy Moore, and was sister to Minnie Mae Moore Laughinghouse, Elizabeth Moore Lilley, Ruth Moore Cunningham, and James Woodrow Moore, all of whom preceded her in death.
A graduate of the Rex Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh, she worked as a Registered Nurse until becoming a fulltime homemaker, wife, and mother. She and her late husband of 55 years, Talcott Wrey Watkins, a well-known Funeral Director in Wake County, were members of St. Paul’s Christian Church in Raleigh for many years. After her children were of age, she worked as an instructor with Weight Watchers, later as a seamstress, and then because of her husband’s failing health, was his primary caregiver for 25 years. They lived in Raleigh until 2001 when they moved to Edenton to be closer to their children.
Surviving are three daughters, Barbara W. Smith (Stone) of Mechanicsville, VA, Anita W. Andersen (Glenn) of Fayetteville, and Belinda W. Flynn (Patrick) of Edenton; a son, Daniel Wrey Watkins (Paris) of Henrico, VA; five grandchildren, Christina Smith Hamilton (Matthew), Alice Cameron Watkins (Erik), Jeremy Tyler Smith, Curtis Alexander Baker, and Callie Marie Baker; and one great-grandson, Maxwell Wrey Hamilton.
The family is planning a private service at a later time, after which she and her husband’s cremated remains will be placed in a memorial garden being created at the home.
