Barbara Phelps Bateman

   Barbara Jean Phelps Bateman, 73, of 319 Coral Lane, Edenton, NC, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at her home where she was being cared for by her family.

   Mrs. Bateman was born in Washington County on May 16, 1947, and was the daughter of the late Abe H. and Audrey Whines Phelps. A homemaker, she was a member of Holly Neck Church of Christ.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gerry Phelps.

   A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she loved spending time with her family. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Richard E. Bateman, Sr.; two daughters, Bobbie Sawyer and husband, Alan, of Edenton, and Kristy Craddock and husband, Nick, of Columbia; two sons, Chris Phelps and wife, Brenda, of Edenton, and Richard Bateman and wife, Melody, of Creswell; a sister, Carol Smith, and two brothers, Gary Phelps and Mike Phelps, all of Roper; 14 grandkids and 17 great-grandkids.

   A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Holly Neck Church of Christ Cemetery and will be conducted by longtime family friend, The Rev. Russell Bootwright.
