Ann Stokes Askew, 71, of 216 White Oak Road, Eure, NC, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
Born in Colerain on January 17, 1952, Ann was the daughter of the late Edgar Lee Stokes, Jr. and Myra Sharp Stokes. A graduate of Lawrence Academy, she then attended Chowan College. First employed as a bookkeeper with her father at E.L. Stokes and Son, she later worked as a sales representative with Channels 7 and 9 in Greenville. While in Greenville, she was a member of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. She later met and married the love of her life, Wade Askew, and they enjoyed 34 years of marriage. Together, Ann and Wade worked side by side and were dedicated poultry farmers.
Ann was a lover of life and people and never met a stranger. The perpetual “Energizer Bunny”, she always enjoyed helping others and was notorious for remembering family and friends with cards and gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and general support. Other enjoyments included her time spent at Colerain Beach, Carova, and anywhere else she could fish.
A faithful and ever-present member of Eure Baptist Church, she sang in the choir, was active on both the Flower and Social committees, and with the Meals on Wheels ministry having served as its Director. In support and love of her community, she was also a founding member of the Gates County Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving in addition to her husband is her daughter, Melissa White (Paul) of Eure; four grandchildren, Sammy (Casey) of Sunbury, and Rylan, Lacey, and Molly, all of Eure; a brother, Lee Stokes (Kathy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a sister, Mary Helen Dempsey (George) of Wilson; a niece, Laura Turner (Chris); a nephew, Hunter Rooker (Jacklyn); and other extended family members and many friends. Ann cherished her family ties and was so devoted to Wade- they were inseparable.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Eure Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, Dr. Wayne Proctor. A private burial will follow in the Howell Family Cemetery near the home. Friends may visit the family at the residence.
