Alvis Perry Winslow

Alvis Perry Winslow passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019, at her home in Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Mrs. Winslow was born in Chowan County, NC and was the daughter of the late Conroy Alvis and Catherine Hofler Perry. She and her late husband, Burwell R. Winslow made their home in Suffolk for many years, and she taught collectively for 14 years in both the Suffolk Public Schools and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

Her love for gardening and flower arranging made her a valued member of the Nansemond River Garden Club, and an Artistic Judge for the Garden Club of Virginia. She developed a lifelong passion for golf, and enjoyed playing with her friends at the Cedar Point Country Club, as well as extended friends she met through the sport. She loved her dear friends, as they were genuine, generous with their time, and were always there for her in healthy and unhealthy moments. They made wonderful memories together with golf, bridge, trips, or arranging flowers. Family and friends were so important in her life, and she loved them all.

Surviving are her daughters, Catherine Winslow Evanoff and husband, Joe, and Linda Winslow Jernigan and Wayne Umphlett; seven grandchildren, Emily Evanoff Turner and husband, John, Elizabeth Evanoff Ryan and husband, Kevin, Catherine Evanoff, Lauren Jernigan, Meredith Jernigan Wykle and husband, Brandon, Fleet Jernigan, and Chandler Jernigan, two great-grandchildren, Lincoln Turner and Catherine Ryan; her brother, Sidney L. “Bud” Perry and his wife, Nancy, and their children; and three special first cousins.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. on the family plot at Warwick Baptist Church, 4314 Virginia Road, Hobbsville, NC, and will be conducted by the Rev. Kip Vinson.

To celebrate her life, there will be a gathering of family and friends at her home, 536 W. Riverview Drive, Suffolk, immediately following the service.

Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting the family and online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
