Alva Askew Felton, 90, a longtime resident of the White Oak community, Gates, NC, died Monday, July 5, 2021 in her home where she was cared for by her family.
Mrs. Felton was born in Gates County on May 3, 1931, and was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Grace Lilley Askew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, J.Z. Felton; and by her brothers, Tommy Askew, and Elliott Askew (wife, Bertha, deceased).
A retired bookkeeper from the White Oak plant of Byrum Oil Company, she was a faithful member of Eure Christian Church where she was active in the Ladies Aid and Women’s Fellowship, and from 1959 through 2004 had served as the choir director, organist and pianist.
Surviving are two daughters, Janice F. Outland (husband, Felton) of Sunbury, and Luanne F. Dorsey (husband, Wesley) of Gates; two sisters, Ann Yvonne Howell (husband, Lowell) of Eure, and Betty Lou Duell (husband, Jimmy) of Smithfield, VA; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Askew of Eure; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Eure Christian Church and will be conducted by the Revs. Wade Bennett and Wayne Gardner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the social hall immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
