Hazel Wright Ammann

On Thursday March 22 2012 Hazel Wright Ammann left this life to begin her new journey to a better life of freedom and no pain. She will now be able to walk and talk again after being trapped in a body that was injured during a traffic accident 17 years ago. Oh how free she will be to walk up to the Lord and hold his hand. Hazel was born on March 11 1928 in La Plata Maryland and was the daughter of the late Lodge and Lizzy Wright. Growing up and going to school there she later met and married John Frederick Ammann who was in the United States Navy. During their Navy years they were transferred to several places including Alaska. After John retired with 20 years of service in the Navy they stayed in Virginia Beach where John began a career in mechanics. Hazel helped him open their own service station there where they remained until retirement called in 1971. Moving then to their summer home in the Arrowhead Beach subdivision of Chowan County Hazel discovered retirement was not for her and began working in the PicWick Pool Hall & Grill in Edenton. During her off time she and John enjoyed fishing on the Chowan River and working in the yard she so loved. After 10 years of working at the pool room she left to help her daughter Rhonda operate the Crossroads Caf. When Rhonda left the caf Hazel kept the business operating. Hazel enjoyed cooking for her family on Sundays and making sure everyone was full before they left. Christmas was much the same as she made sure everyone received presents they could use and had a feast to enjoy. On the morning of May 18 1994 while on her way to work Hazel was involved in an accident. The doctors did not give the family much hope; however Hazel survived for 17 years and continued to give her loved ones much joy and love. During these years she enjoyed trips to Maryland to visit her sister Gladys and family and numerous special outings with her family in Tyner. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by four brothers J.C. Eugene Mike and Billy Wright. Surviving are her children John Frederick Ammann Jr. of Edenton Freida Doubts and husband Jim of Portsmouth VA Duanne Ammann and wife Teri of Sunbury and Rhonda Copeland and husband Durwood of Tyner; grandchildren Jim Bray E.J. Bray Melissa Pitts Valerie Byrum Stacey Priest and Paul Copeland; step-grandchildren Jenny Tammi and Carey; great-grandchildren Ashley Taylor Matthew Morgan Micala Alden Lindsey Austin Tyler Cole and Dalton; sisters Gladys Lyons of Mechanicsville MD and Fonzie Coombs of Indian Head MD; and a brother Lodge M. Wright also of Indian Head. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory 735 Virginia Road Edenton by Pastor Steve Mizell. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the home of Rhonda and Durwood 126 Sign Pine Road Tyner.
