George Melvin Gilbert, Sr.

George Melvin Gilbert, Sr., 84, of 1412 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC, and formerly of Fredericksburg, VA, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 in his home. Mr. Gilbert was born in Winston-Salem, NC and was the son of the late George Robert and Flora Olive Grubbs Gilbert. A career law enforcement officer, he had worked with the Winston-Salem Police Dept., as a Lieutenant with the Naval Observatory, on the Security Guard Force at Cameron Station with the Defense Technical Information Center, and retired from security with the Topographical Engineering Center at Fort Belvoir, VA. A Purple Heart recipient, and a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he had served in the Coast Guard, the Army, and the Merchant Marines. Since moving to Elizabeth City some 15 years ago, he had enjoyed membership in New Begun United Methodist Church and Eureka Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife of over 60 years, Judith Lee Iris Gilbert; two daughters, Donna Lee Gilbert Hudgins and husband Greg of Elizabeth City and Elizabeth Iris "Lisa" Gilbert Stout and husband Ed of Fredericksburg, VA; two sons, Bruce Wayne Gilbert and wife Suzy of Chapin, SC and George M. Gilbert, Jr. and wife Carol of Elizabeth City; a brother, Robert W. Gilbert; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30th, at 1:00 p.m. in New Begun United Methodist Church by Pastor Roger Braun. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC, is assisting the family with arrangements.
