Doris Hassell Spear, 81, of 4071 Pea Ridge Road, Roper, NC, died Thursday, July 5, 2012 in Vidant Inpatient Hospice, Greenville, NC. Mrs. Spear was born in Washington County, NC and was the daughter of the late Rupert Lyle and Bertha Lee Hufton Hassell. Formerly employed with Walker's Egg Farm, Plymouth Garment Factory, and as a teacher's assistant in the Creswell School System, she was a faithful member of Scuppernong Church of Christ where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, worked in Vacation Bible School, and was active in the Ladies Aid Ministry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Louis Marvin Spear on June 21st of this year; and by her brother, Rupert Harrell Hassell. Surviving are three sons and their wives; Randall Louis Spear and Cynthia of Roper, NC Representative Timothy Lee Spear and Judith of Creswell, and Neal Gordon Spear and Linda of Roper; her sister, Nellie Ruth Furlough, and her brother, Steve Dalton Hassell, both of Roper; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Scuppernong Church of Christ by Ministers Don Phelps, Thomas Biggs, and Cleve Edwards. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, Edenton, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the church.
