Guy Leroy Toppin, 85, of 202 Lynn Drive, Edenton, NC, died Sunday, July 15, 2012 in his home. Mr. Toppin was born in Chowan County and was the son of the late Nolan Bunch and Jennie Parker Toppin. The retired owner and operator of "The Bride and Groom" in Elizabeth City, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion, a charter member of The Order of the Red Men, and a member of Edenton Baptist Church where he had served on the finance committee and as an usher. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Lillie Mae Beaman and Hazel Spruill and by brothers, Troy, Wilford, and Maurice Toppin. Surviving are his wife of nearly 65 years, Doris Tynch Toppin; two daughters, Linda Jo Toppin Kight of Elizabeth City and Donna Lynn Toppin Crain and husband Jerry of Chapel Hill; a sister, Shirley Kirby of Edenton; five brothers, Earl Toppin of Wilmington, NC, Garland Toppin, Horace Toppin, and Durwood Toppin, all of Edenton, and Larry Toppin of Crystal Springs, MS; three grandchildren, Jerry Crain, Jr. of Chapel Hill, Shelia Ann Jackson and husband Cameron of Fayetteville, and Christopher Kight of Elizabeth City; and a great-granddaughter, Lily Jean Jackson of Fayetteville. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, handling arrangements.
