Grace Smith Thurman White

Grace Smith Thurman "Nanny" White, 97, of 451 Bagley Swamp Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mrs. White was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Nelson J. and Roxie Teague Smith. A retired nurse, she worked for many years with the late Dr. I.A. Ward in Hertford, and was a faithful, and as long as health permitted, active member of both Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church and Gideon's International. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by both her husbands, Lyle M. Thurman and Elwood Q. White, her sister, Mozelle S. Peabody, her brother, The Rev. Eugene Smith, and her daughter, Brenda Ann White. Surviving are her daughter, Ann Thurman Winslow and husband Wayne; two granddaughters, Belinda Winslow Jackson and husband Troy and Donna Winslow Haskett and husband Cliff; two great-granddaughters, Breanna and Lindsey Jackson; and her faithful canine companion, "Hank", all of Hertford. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church by the Rev. James Spaugh. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and all other times at the residence.
