Madeleine Peirce Nixon, 90, of 710 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012 in Brian Center Health & Rehab, Hertford. Mrs. Nixon was born in Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard Island, MA and was the daughter of the late George L. and Bertina B. Peirce. In earlier years she was employed with New England Tel and Tel Co. on the Vineyard and during World War II was a secretary with the Navy Dept. of the National Radio Co. in Malden, MA. She later retired from the Perquimans County Board of Education. A member of Hertford United Methodist Church, and former member of the Wesleyan Circle Guild and the Mary Martha Circle, she with her husband, the late Francis Blount "Panky" Nixon, served for many years as the Youth Directors for the Perquimans County Recreation Center. Other involvement included work with the West Hertford Board of Registration. Madeleine lived a full life and was well loved by her family and many dear friends. Surviving are her loving daughter, Susan Nixon Van Name and husband Bill of Boones Mill, VA; her grandson, William "Billy" Van Name, Jr., his wife Hillary, and their son Hugh, of Roanoke, VA; sisters-in-law, Helene W. Nixon of Hertford and Maureen C. Peirce of Sanford, ME; brother-in-law, Hollowell C. Nixon of Peabody, MA and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. H. Gene Boyce. Friends may join the family beginning Thursday afternoon at her residence or in the funeral home immediately following the service on Saturday. Flowers are welcomed or contributions in her memory may be made to the Hertford United Methodist Church, 200 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC 27944.
