Captain Charles Laing "Mac" McDonald, 80, of Hertford, NC, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 25, 2012. Mr. McDonald was born on January 23, 1932 to the late Charles Laing, Sr. and Aileen Doxey McDonald. A retired tug boat captain and owner of B & M Trucking, he was a devoted member of City Road United Methodist Church. He brought so much love and joy to his family and everyone he met. He never met a stranger and was always there to help anyone. His wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margaret Elliott McDonald; five children, Aileen Maillet and husband Donald Roberts of Elizabeth City, Lillian "Sis" Chappell and husband Jerry of Hertford, Terri Goodman and husband Derek of Hertford, Kenneth Charles "Buddy" McDonald and wife Melissa of Hertford and Alan Ray McDonald of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Daniel Ross Maillet and wife Michelle of Elizabeth City, David Wayne West and wife Jamie, Lindsey Goodman and fiancé Matt Woodell, Hinton McDonald and Colleen McDonald, all of Hertford; and four great-grandchildren, Lila West and Samuel Sanders, both of Hertford, and Caden and Carley Hunter, both of Elizabeth City. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in City Road Methodist Church, 511 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Friends may join the family for a reception in Edwards Hall immediately following the services on Saturday and all other times at the home of Buddy and Melissa McDonald, 573 Woodville Road, Hertford. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund of City Road Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
