Martha Ellen Garland Murphy

Martha Ellen Garland Murphy, 97, of 875 Union Branch Road, Corapeake, NC, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Suffolk, VA. Mrs. Murphy was born in Harrison County, WV and was the daughter of the late George Jacob Alfred Burton and Anna Ella Romesburg Garland. A homemaker, she was a member of Catawba Methodist Church in Catawba, WV and had more recently attended Great Fork Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Lester Murphy; a sister, Geraldine Elizabeth Garland Swisher; three brothers, James William "Bill" Garland, Ralph George "Farmer" Garland, and Howard Marion Garland; her son-in-law, Frank Jaskowiak; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Louise Harris Garland; and a grandson, Matthew Murphy. Surviving are her daughter, Ethel Ann Garland Jaskowiak of Corapeake; a son, Mark Lester Murphy of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Michael and James Jaskowiak and Jordan and Meghan Murphy; and two great-grandsons, Mason Frank Jaskowiak and Tyler Hogan. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, by Dr. Donald Ray Jones. Friends may join the family Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the residence. Friends may also join the family on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont, WV. Burial will follow in Catawba Cemetery, Catawba, WV.
