Calvin John Lane

Calvin John Lane, 89, of 114 Russell Drive, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, October 18, 2012 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Lane was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late John M. and Annie Alexander Lane. Retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he and his wife lived on Subic Bay, Philippines, for six years while he taught the blacksmith trade to its people after World War II. A Navy veteran of that war, he served on the Battleship New York and saw action in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was a member of the William P. Stallings Post 126 of the American Legion and a 60 year member of the Perquimans Masonic Lodge #106. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters Julia Weston, Alma Hurdle, and infant Ida Mae Lane, and by brothers Winford E. and Infant William Lane. Surviving are his wife of nearly 67 years, Clara Smith Lane; his daughter, Dianne Lane Spitzform and husband Kenneth of Amelia Island, FL; two sisters, Thelma Smith of Hertford and Selma Gibson of Daytona Beach, FL; two brothers, Preston Lane of Hampton, VA and Clyde Lane of Hertford; and two grandsons, Erik Spitzform of Washington, DC and Bryan Spitzform of Roanoke, VA. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. James Spaugh. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at the residence.
