Peggy Josie Layden, 60, formerly of 1474 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, NC, died Monday, November 26, 2012 in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Edenton. Peggy was born in Pasquotank County and was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Mittie Jean Russell Layden. A member of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church and the W.M.U., she had for many years served as the church greeter, and was honored by the church with "The Peggy Layden Day" in August of 1992. Peggy leaves behind special memories of visiting customers at the family store, Layden's Supermarket. Upon her move to Britthaven, (now Chowan River), Peggy made numerous precious friendships with the residents and her caregivers. God used Peggy's special needs to bless so many. She was truly an inspiration to her family and loved ones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nephews, Baby Daniel and Baby Pete. Surviving are her sisters, Brenda Dail and husband Steve of Hertford, Barbara Robbins and husband Perry of Belvidere, and Linda White and husband Chad of Hertford; brothers, Douglas Layden and wife Geri of Belvidere and Elton Layden and wife Arlene of Farmville, VA; eight nieces, Christy Huggins and husband B.J., Lisa Sawyer and husband Michael, Natalie Layden and Emily Price, Kendall Payne and husband Dwight, Jodi Robbins, Lacey Winslow and husband Austin, Amber Mewborn, and Whitney Jo White; seven nephews, Charlie Layden, Bobby Layden and wife Stacey, Mike Dail and wife Ingrid, Adam Robbins and wife Amy, Billy Baughan, Clayton White, and Chase White; six great-nieces; eight great-nephews; and many, many friends and extended family members. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Whiteville Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Lonnie Coker, William Byrum, and Adron Modlin. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Elizabeth City. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and all other times at the family home place on Belvidere Road.
