Jerry Wayne Motley, Sr., 67, of 8366 Longstreet Lane, Suffolk, VA, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012 in his home after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Mr. Motley was born in Portsmouth, VA and was the son of the late Robert Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Moore Motley. A retired painter from Norfolk Naval Air Base (PWC), he was an avid deer hunter and fisherman and was a member of both Somerton Hunt Club and Reynoldson Baptist Church. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Motley. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Linda Curle Motley, a daughter, Diane Motley Stephenson and husband Mark; sons, Jerry Wayne Motley, Jr. and wife Vicki and Ernest Edward Motley and wife Tammy, all of Suffolk, and an adopted son, Robert Matthew Motley of South Dakota; three sisters, Fay Motley White and husband Sam of Cumberland, VA, Carolyn Motley Chaney and Linda Motley Mazzone and husband Mike, both of Portsmouth; two brothers, James "Pete" Motley and wife Elise of Suffolk and Robert Thomas Motley and wife Dorothy of Danville, VA; and four grandchildren, John Adam Stephenson and wife Ashley, Brooke Victoria Stephenson and fiancé Ricky, Alex Griffith, and Hunter Franklin Motley, all of Suffolk. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Revs. Cody Brinkley and Jimmy Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, NC, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family in the church social hall immediately following the services on Saturday and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Reynoldson Baptist Church, in care of Rev. Cody Brinkley, 90 Lees Mill Road, Gates, NC 27937 and is to be designated for use in the Memorial Fund, or to Somerton Hunt Club, in care of Coleman Boyce, 3604 Pittmantown Road, Suffolk, VA 23438.
