Fleetwood Sawyer

Phillip Fleetwood Sawyer, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 3, 2013. Mr. Sawyer was born in Chesapeake, VA and was the son of the late Norfleet and Catherine Sawyer. A retired welder and pipefitter having worked at area shipyards, he loved working on cars, playing cards and games with his loved ones. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was baptized November 11, 2012. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Lillian Banks Sawyer; four children, Fleetwood Sawyer of Elizabeth City, Joyce Twiddy and husband Gary of Coinjock, Phil Sawyer and wife Cheryl of Camden, and Phyllis Gryder and husband Mark of Chesapeake; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Vincent Sawyer of Elizabeth City and Eugene Sawyer of Moyock; and a sister, Minnie Arnold of Camden. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. in Calvary Baptist Church, 801 Riverside Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, with Dr. Sanford Martin presiding. Friends may join the family in the church social hall immediately following the service on Saturday. A private burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery with Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, handling arrangements. The family would like to thank the physicians and nurses at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for the care and compassion given their loved one.
