Marie Stanton Divers, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Affectionately known as "Mammaw", she was raised in the Winfall community of Perquimans County and was the youngest of nine children born to the late Willis J. and Annie M. Stanton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood Divers, a son-in-law, Welly White, all her siblings, and by her best friend, Mary Ruth Smith. Marie and Haywood loved restoring antique furniture and going to auctions and eventually they opened their own antique shop. She also worked for Dozier's Florist for over 35 years, and after retirement, continued in that work by opening a flower shop in her home, naming it Marie's Silks. "Mammaw" loved fishing on the Perquimans River with her husband and friends and will always be remembered for her kind and generous spirit and as one who never saw a stranger. She was a longtime member of Hertford Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memory are three daughters whom she adored, Dianne White, and Barbara Pivinski and husband Tony of Hertford, and Monica Ranhorn and husband Vann of Elizabeth City; grandchildren, Wally White (Laura) of Florida, Kelli Poe (Alex) of Apex, Woody White (Mica) of Nags Head, Tracie Jackson (Cecil) of Greenville, and Jason Ross (Karen) of Powell's Point; and 10 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a beloved sister-in-law, Mary Stanton of Portsmouth, VA; a very special niece, Darlene Harrell, and lifelong friends, Elsie Gregory, and Charles and Harriet Woodard, all of Hertford, along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. H. Gene Boyce and the Rev. Greg Clark.
