Luther Warren Hassell, 87, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 in Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Hassell was born in Washington County, NC and was the son of the late Stephen Arthur and Sarah Huffton Hassell. As a skilled craftsman, he was especially noted for his cabinets and other wood-working projects which today still have places of distinction in many area homes. A member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church and the VFW, he also served his country during WWII as a member of the US Navy in the Pacific theater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Hassell, sisters, Blanche Ange, Lilly Curles, and Ada Dail and brothers, Wilbert, Raymond, and Joseph Elwood Hassell. Surviving are his wife of nearly 53 years, Frances Barnett Hassell; a daughter, Cindy Vallas and husband Chris of Elizabeth City; two sons, Mike Hassell and wife Deb of Charlotte, and Don Hassell and wife Mary of Elizabeth City; a brother, Linwood Hassell and wife Lois also of Elizabeth City; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Fountain of Life Ministries by Pastors Preston Pitchford and Hans Hess. Military honors will be accorded at the church. Friends may join the family in the church immediately following the service on Thursday and all other times at the home of his daughter, 1105 Reid Drive, Elizabeth City.
