Richard William Hinkens, 76, 1912 Arapahoe Trail, Edenton, NC, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 in his home. Mr. Hinkens was born in Ainsworth, WI and was the son of the late Henry and Contessie Erb Hinkens. Retired from the US Air Force after more than 21 years of service and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he then retired from the NARF where he worked for 20 years. A member of St. Anne Catholic and the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion, he also enjoyed his work as a referee in all sports in the Tidewater area. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Jean Willings Hinkens; two daughters, Donna Watterson and husband Bill of Edenton and Sandra Mitchell and husband William of Virginia Beach; two sons, Jeremy Hinkens and wife Grace and Timothy Hinkens and wife Tracy, all of Norfolk; two sisters, Helen Mass of WI and Delores Lindsey of CA; three brothers, Cliff, Joe, and Glen, all of WI; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in St. Anne Catholic Church by the Rev. William Pitts. Military honors will be accorded on the churches lawn following the service. The family will hold a private inurnment at the Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is handling arrangements.
