Gene Ray Lane, 70, of 508 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC, died Friday, April 19, 2013 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, after a stoic battle with cancer. Mr. Lane was born in Chowan County and was the son of the late Norman and Essie Copeland Lane. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Lane. A retired purchasing agent for Sanders Company after 37 years of employment, he was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Always a music enthusiast, he enjoyed playing bass guitar in a combo with lifelong friend Bud Skiles on occasion. Other interests included woodworking and photography. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Nelia Lowe Lane; a son, Steve Lane and wife Ana of Ayden; two daughters, Laura Lane Bostillo and husband Jon of Elizabeth City and Jennifer Amstutz of Greensboro; a brother, Carl G. Lane and wife Ruth of Edenton; a sister-in-law, Virginia Lane, also of Edenton; and four grandchildren, Steven, Jason, Becky, and Jonah. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 27th, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be officiated by the Rev. Bob Young. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service, and all other times at the residence.
