Alfred Abraham Cohen, Jr., 75, of 142 Spindrift Lane, Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013 in his home. Mr. Cohen was born in Norfolk, VA and was the son of the late Alfred A., Sr. and Catherine Bipere Cohen. Retired as a staff sergeant from the Virginia Army National Guard's 229th Military Police Company after 24 years of service, he had also been involved for many years with the N.C. Special Olympics where he and his family were once honored with the "Family of the Year" award. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlotte Cohen, and a brother, Joseph Cohen. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Velma Mae Waterman; five sons, Sammy Cohen of Nevada, William Cohen and wife Charlotte and Tracy Cohen, all of Hertford, Carl Cohen and wife Lena of Edenton, and Thomas Robert Yanuzis and wife Darnetta of Las Vegas, NV; an adopted son, Chad Trotman of Hertford; a sister, Barbara Adcock of Chesapeake, VA; a brother, Sam Cohen of Mississippi; and seven grandchildren, Sam Jr., Michael and Christopher Cohen, Bobbi Hartwell, Anthony Cohen, Cassandra Bennett, and Andrew Yanuzis. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by Pastor James Baker. Burial with full military honors will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at the residence.
