CDR Henry MacEwan "Hank" Johnson, III, USNR (Ret.), age 69, of Edenton, NC, died Saturday, May 4, 2013 in his home. Hank was born in Wilmington, DE, and was the son of the late Henry M., Jr. and Isabel Doris Althouse Johnson. A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, and later from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree, he served for 30 years in both the Navy and the Naval Reserves, and retired with the rank of Commander. Following his active duty career, he worked for over 19 years with Digital Equipment Corporation in Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia and in Washington, D.C. In 2001, Hank returned to service for his country as a primary and supervisory examiner with the U.S. Patent Office. Away from the office, Hank was most at home on the water. On weekends he could be found sailing Chesapeake Bay with his family and friends. Hank and his beloved wife frequently vacationed in the Caribbean islands where he rediscovered his passion for scuba diving. Like his father before him, Hank kindled relationships with all he met and was a friend to many. He was able to find a connection with people from all walks of life: restaurateurs, pool attendants, politicians, and mechanics. He found enjoyment being with and helping the people surrounding him. Surviving are his wife of over 22 years, Deborah Dodge Johnson; his daughter, Kimberly Johnson Sanderlin and husband Timothy of Chesapeake, VA and their children Kelsey, Brooke, and Evan; his son, Henry M. Johnson, IV and wife Carrie of Portland, OR and their children Keira and Audrey; his sister, Elsa Johnson Hurst of Fort Myers, FL; his aunt, Emily DiMichele of Wilmington, DE; and his niece, Andrea Leigh Asbury of Van Alstyne, TX. A gathering for friends to join the family will be held Monday, May 13th, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 15, at 9:00 a.m. in Memorial Chapel on Fort Myer. Burial with military honors will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. The family asks that flowers be omitted, and contributions be made to the PenFed Foundation, 2930 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22314, (www.pentagonfoundation.org), and be designated for the benefit of Defender's Lodge.
