Joseph "Joey" Charles Davenport, III, 20, of 79 S. River Road, Plymouth, NC, and formerly of Edenton and Creswell, died Thursday, May 9, 2013 in his home surrounded by his family. Joey was born in Chowan County on July 3, 1992. A volunteer and office assistant at Pettigrew State Park, he was a member of Hunters Helping Kids, The NC Handicapped Sportsmen Assn., the Friends of Pettigrew State Park, had received the Governor's Medallion Award for Volunteerism, and loved hunting, fishing, swimming, boating, sky diving, and 4-wheeling. On May 4th, Joey was proudly made an Honorary United States Marine. Preceded in death by grandfathers, Joseph Charles Davenport, Sr., and Jack "Buddy" E. Shrader, Sr., he is survived by his parents; Joseph "Joe" Charles Davenport, Jr. and Rebecca "Becki" Shrader Davenport of Plymouth; a sister, Cassandra (Cassie) Dawn Davenport and boyfriend, Kristopher "Kris" M. Simons; a nephew, Korbin Malachi Simons; grandparents, Ricky and Donna Davenport Scott of Edenton, and Sandra "MimMim" D Adams Shrader of Columbus, IN; aunts and uncles, Jack E and Heather M. Shrader Jr. and Wayne L. and Rikki B. Shrader both of Columbus, IN, and Tracy I. Davenport of Edenton; cousins, Megan M. Shrader, Evan E. Shrader, and Gage L. Shrader all of Columbus, IN To honor Joey's longtime request, the family has donated his eyes to The North Carolina Eye Bank and his body to the Duke University School of Medicine, to be used for anatomical research. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Joey's life will be held Sunday, May 19th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton.
