Charles James Smyth, 75, of 898 Union Branch Road, Corapeake, NC, went home to be with the Lord, on Friday, June 14, 2013, from Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA. Mr. Smyth was born in Norfolk, VA and was the son of the late Charles Marshall Smith and Frances Smiecienski Smith Davenport. Employed with the Norfolk Police Dept. for over 34 years, he retired in 1993, had attained the rank of Sergeant, had received several commendations and awards, and made many lasting friendships. His memberships included Masonic Lodge #89, AF & AM, and the Norfolk Moose Lodge #39. Surviving are his wife of over 37 years, Joyce Elaine Hughes Stevens Smyth; a daughter, Debra A. Equils and husband Larry of Roper; a son, Jerry Lee Smyth and wife Jackie of Tyner; step-sons, Scott Stevens and wife Teresa of Chesapeake, and Clark Stevens of Channelview, TX; his step-mother, Nancee Smith of Virginia Beach; his best friend of over 50 years, Julian Bagley; five grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, by the Rev. Jonathan Rismiller. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at the home. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or to St. Mary's Infant Home.
