Betty Jane Askew Chappell, 85, of Winston-Salem, NC, and formerly of Gatesville, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013 in Springwood Nursing Home. Mrs. Chappell was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late Willie Bryant and Bettie Eure Askew. A Certified Nursing Assistant, with a specialty in working with cancer patients, she had also, in years past, worked at the Ahoskie Sewing Factory. She was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church, and was faithful in its works and attendance until moving to Winston-Salem to be near her daughter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Preston Chappell, and by her son, James Preston "J.P." Chappell. Surviving are her daughter, Rachel Chappell Powell and husband David of Winston-Salem; her daughter-in-law, Ann Spivey Chappell of Hobbsville; three grandchildren, Julie Tuttle and husband Bryan of Kernersville, Steve Chappell of Hobbsville, and Angie King and husband Brett of Elizabeth City; three great-granddaughters, Ashley, Brianna, and Lauren, and by a great-grandson due to be born in August, Elijah. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Eure, by the Rev. Gene Asbill. Friends may join the family in the Cool Spring Fellowship Hall immediately following the graveside service. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.
