Garland Toppin, 79, of 2938 Rocky Hock Road, Edenton, NC, died Friday, July 12, 2013 in his home. Mr. Toppin was born in Chowan County and was the son of the late Nolan Bunch and Jennie Parker Toppin. A retired farmer, he was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and the Oak Grove Hunting Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Ray Jethro Toppin; sisters Lillie Mae Beaman and Hazel Spruill, and by brothers, Maurice, Troy, Guy, and Wilford Toppin. Surviving are his daughter, Charlotte T. Nixon and husband Leon; two sons, Ricky E. Toppin and friend Tabitha Jenkins and Jeffery Dean Toppin and friend Marlene Wilson, all of Edenton; a sister, Shirley Kirby of Edenton; four brothers, Earl Toppin of Wilmington, Durwood Toppin of Edenton, Haurice Toppin of Tyner, and Larry Toppin of Crystal Springs, MS; six grandchildren, Joey Nixon and wife Kim, Jennie Droze and husband Jim, Jesse Toppin, Jason Nixon and fiancé Kristen, Nolan Toppin and wife Rebecca, and Ricky Toppin, Jr. and friend Ginny; and seven great-grandchildren, Vanessa Nixon, Jenna Droze, Victoria Nixon, Meredith Toppin, Jared Droze, Makenzie Toppin, and Rylei Toppin. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Rev. Randy Browder. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
