James Preston Cayton

James Preston Cayton, 75, of 592 Body Road, Hertford, NC, died Monday, July 15, 2013 in his home. Mr. Cayton was born in Chowan County to the late Rev. Preston and Estelle Van Horn Cayton. A retired insurance agent, he was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church, the River City Lions Club of Elizabeth City and served his country in the Army National Guard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Paige Tucker and Geneva Gadow, and brothers Rodney and Carl Cayton. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Dottie Cartwright Cayton; sisters, Sybil Harrell of Edenton, Faye Maira of Wilmington, NC, Jean Cayton of Grimesland and Joan Rudd also of Edenton; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p. m. in Woodland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Toni Wood. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, in charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
