Lester Hobbs Simpson, 84, died Thursday, July 4, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. Mr. Simpson was born in Durants Neck on December 4, 1928, and was the son of the late Daniel Webster and Ruth Hobbs Simpson. A lifelong resident of Perquimans County, he was employed by Scott and Halstead Trucking firm in Weeksville, and later retired from the Town of Hertford's ABC Board after 30 years. A member of Hertford United Methodist Church and an associate member of Snug Harbor Community Church, he served with distinction on the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners for 24 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John R. "Jack" Simpson and Marion D. "Red" Simpson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Loraine Harris Simpson, of Hertford; one daughter, Anne Simpson Cole (David) of Chapel Hill; three grandchildren whom he adored, Amy Charlton Cole of Seattle, Wash., Taylor Cole Smith (Daniel) of Portland, Ore., and Dayton Spencer Cole of Louisville, Ky.; and many nieces; nephews; and extended family whom he cherished. The family would like to thank UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, UNC Hospice and Aegis Home Care, Chapel Hill, for their compassionate care of their husband, father, and grandfather. A celebration of Mr. Simpson's life will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hertford United Methodist Church.
