Raleigh Baker, 88, of 536A Ownley Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 in Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation, Elizabeth City. Mr. Baker was born in Currituck County and was the son of the late Daniel Ned and Ella Kirles Baker. A retired farmer, he had formerly been a member of Perkins United Methodist Church and more recently was a member of Fountain of Life. He was an Army veteran having served in World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Page Baker, a daughter, Diana Baker, a son, Raleigh Baker, Jr., a brother, Daniel Baker, sisters, Ruth, Orian, Margie, Lucy, Atha and Annie, and a step-brother, Leslie Sawyer. Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Thelma Phillips Stevenson Baker; two daughters, Debbie Simons and husband Bruce and Paula Crocker; two step-sons, Ricky Stevenson and wife Daphnne and Jerry Stevenson and wife Robin, all of Elizabeth City; a sister, Nora B. Horton and husband Don of Taylors Beach; a half-brother, George Ferebee and wife Gerry of Eastern Shore, VA; a sister-in-law, Ruby Sawyer of Suffolk, VA; three grandchildren, Kelly, Ryan, and Raleigh, a great-grandson, Eli; many nieces and nephews, 13 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Fountain of Life by the Revs. Hans Hess, William Rembert and Charles Wellons. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, handling arrangements.
