Daniel Leland "Dan" Berry, 86, of 121 Nixon Street, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, August 1, 2013 in his home. Mr. Berry was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late Young and Mattie Howell Berry. A retired postal clerk from the Hertford Post Office, he was a member of Hertford Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and had formerly taught Sunday school, and was a charter member of the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. He was a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edgar Berry, Jr. Surviving are his wife of nearly 62 years, Ann Madre Berry; two sons, Ben Berry of Virginia Beach, VA and Bill Berry and wife Emma of Hertford; and four grandchildren, Justin Berry, Britt Godfrey, Julia Berry and Will Berry. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Hertford Baptist Church by the Rev. Gregory Clark. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, assisting the family with arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Hertford Baptist Church, PO Box 34, Hertford, NC 27944 and is to be designated for use in the Youth or Scholarship Fund.
