Elton Linus Kemp

Elton Linus Kemp, 82, loving husband, father, and grandfather, of 114 Kemp Lane, Hertford, NC, went to be with his beloved Savior on Thursday, August 15, 2013, from his home with his family by his side. Mr. Kemp was born in Norfolk, VA and was the son of the late Wilmer H. Kemp and Viola Blount Lane. He attended Bob Jones University before enlisting in the United States Navy where he served during the Korean War. A retired supervisor from the Norfolk Naval Air Re-work Facility (NARF), he and his wife lived in Virginia Beach for many years and attended Tabernacle Church in Norfolk. After moving to Hertford, they became faithful members of Snug Harbor Community Church, where Elton acted on his special love for missions, orphans, JAARS, and World Reach. He loved to volunteer in his community, worked with Habitat for Humanity, and frequently walked along Harvey Point Road to pick up litter. He had a life-long love of nature, and spent much of his time with his family traveling, fishing, camping, and enjoying God's creation. Elton was a humble, quiet man who loved the Lord and his family with all of his heart and led by example. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William L. Kemp. Surviving are his devoted wife of 60 years, Ruth Wright Kemp; a daughter, Donna Miller and husband Thomas of Gates; three sons, R. Milton Kemp of Windsor, VA, Cecil Kemp and wife Yvonne of Suffolk, VA, and Karl David Kemp of Hertford; a sister-in-law, Diane Kemp of Virginia Beach; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 24th, at 11:00 a.m. in Snug Harbor Community Church, and will be officiated by the Revs. Howard Sutton and Stanley Nixon. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, handled the cremation arrangements.
