Lassell Elton Chappell, 91, of 905 County Line Road, Tyner, NC, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in his home. Mr. Chappell was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late George Oliver and Pearl Ward Chappell. Retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he later worked as a fisherman and storekeeper, was an avid gardener, and loved to work in his yard. A member of Hunter's Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church and the American Legion, he was an Army veteran of World War II, and had served as a Ranger in the 81st Infantry in both the American and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters where he attained the rank of Sergeant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Gloria, Picola, Eula, and Beulah; and by brothers, Arnold, Otis, and Adrian. Surviving are his wife of over 71 years, Melba Dale Chappell; a daughter, Diane Chappell Mansfield and husband Ervin of Hertford; a son, Elton Bruce Chappell of Merry Hill; a brother, Russell Chappell of Tyner; six grandchildren, Corey Pierce, Stacey Ward, Kevin Pierce, Jolie Raper, Wendy Moore, and Shannon Modlin; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. in Hunter's Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church by Pastors Dean Jarvis and Buck Leary. Burial with military honors will follow in the family cemetery near the home. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
