Johnny Michael Hora, 65, of 840 NC 137, Eure, NC, died Saturday, September 28, 2013 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, VA. Mr. Hora was born in Bertie County and was the son of the late Anthony Michael Hora, and Lonnie Ray and Clora Dunlow Newbern. A retired controller from International Paper in Franklin, VA after nearly 40 years of employment, he was an accountant, and currently worked at Ashton Lewis Lumber Company in Gatesville. A small business owner, he founded and operated for many years Gates County Satellite and installed and serviced systems throughout the area. A member of Eure Christian Church, he served on the board of Deacons, was the church treasurer, and was active in the Men's Layman Fellowship. Also a member of and treasurer of White Oak Hunting Club and Raye's Beach Fishing Club, he was a member of Gideon's International, and served on the Gates County Board of Commissioners and the board of the Gates County Dept. of Social Services. He had served in the United States Navy and the Naval Reserves. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Newbern Riddick. Surviving are his wife of over 43 years, Betty Jean Mise Hora; a daughter, Kristie Hora Howell and husband Jeremy of Como; a son, Marcus Ray Hora of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a sister, Janet Newbern Lynch and husband Alton of Ahoskie; and two granddaughters he absolutely adored, Ansley and Avery Howell. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the family plot in Eure Christian Church Cemetery, and will be officiated by the Rev. Michael Brinkley and the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Friends may join the family Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and other times at the residence.
